Since iOS 11, Apple devices save photos as HEIC because it stores comparable quality in roughly half the space of a JPG. The trade-off is compatibility: plenty of Windows apps, Android phones, web upload forms, older photo editors, and printing services still cannot read HEIC. Converting to JPG trades a little file size for the certainty that the photo opens absolutely everywhere.
